The follow-up has been determined by funding and the design of associated bolt-on studies. The main follow-up waves for the identical sites are captured in the audit trail shown in below figure, which shows the numbers for the main screen, assessment, 1 year follow-up and 2 year rescreen, new selection for assessment and further 1 year follow-up, 6 year follow-up of the assessed (with venepuncture), 8 year follow-up of those with intensions to donate, and 10 year follow-up of the total sample.

In addition to this in the first few year, the main associated studies are the

1) The Resource Implication Study (RIS) 1992/94

4 centres – Cambridgeshire, Newcastle, Nottingham, Oxford, which aimed to investigate the costs to families and health and social services of mental and physical frailty in elderly people. This study was funded by the MRC and followed up individuals and their carers over a period of 24months.

2) The Network Study

This study conducted in Gwynedd and Liverpool to look at the support networks that elderly people have and examined the impact of dementia on these networks, an embedded c ase-control study at 2 year incidence stage (Cambridgeshire). This study was funded by DH/Welsh Office 1/6/89 to 31/5/94

3) ESRC Healthy Ageing Project 1992/3

This study interviewed in detail those who were not selected into the Resource Implication Study in Nottingham and Cambridgeshire, which aimed to examine the relationship between sociological, psychological and biological variables in a representative sample of the normal elderly population.

4) Neuropathology and Neurology

The main purpose of this study is to diagnose different types of dementia through examination of brain tissue donated through the CFAS study.

5) Genetics Study

Blood or sputum samples were taken from a subset of the study population five years into the study.
